Signs Of A Growing Facebook Obsession

Rumors about facebook shutting down became viral last week, causing major confusion among its users and well, searches for facebook to swell up.   An excerpt from the weekly world news (WWN) reads:

Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, ... Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

... The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.


Albeit fictitious, this undoubtedly affected facebook users worldwide.  Not enough of a sign of our growing facebook obsession?  Here are some surprising statistics on facebook:
  • The Philippines comprise of 20,802,540 users, with a male/female user ratio of 48% / 52% - earning its rank as Facebooks' 5th top country in 2011.
  • Facebook has 500,000,000 active users all over the world , half of which are logged on to Facebook in any given day.  48% of 18 to 34 year old users check facebook when they wake up, 28% of which check their accounts through their mobile phones before getting out of bed.
  • People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.
  • 57% of people talk more online than they do in real life.
  • There are 1,000,000 links shared, 1,484,000 event invites sent, 1,972,000 friends request accepted, 2,716,000 messages sent, 2,716,000 photos uploaded, 1,323,000 photos tagged, 1,851,000 status updates, 1,587,000 wall posts, and 10,208,000 comments made in every 20 minutes.
